Topic: Do you prefer 3rd party over 1st party Nintendo games?

I get much more hype over third parties than I do first parties in most cases. Its a running gag with me and my partner that I'm a Nintendo fangirl (never had any other consoles) and I barely play any Nintendo games on the system, only Animal Crossing, Splatoon (which has dwindled in playtime in recent years) and 3D mario games that are few and far between.

Currently playing:
Disney Dreamlight Valley
Trails to Azure
Various rhythm games

I bet I will forget to update this.

It wasn't a weird idea to like more 3rd party games than 1st party Nintendo games.

I say it's weird because it makes it sound like people here play almost only Nintendo games, which, if you ask me, you're extremely limiting yourself if you do

I play both Nintendo and PlayStation games for your information.
I have GBA, NDS, 3DS, Gamecube, Wii, Wii U, and Switch games from Nintendo machines.
I have PS1, PS2, PS3, PS4, PSP and PS5 games from my PlayStation machines.

I didn't say I don't play Nintendo games.
I like both of Nintendo and PlayStation games, 3rd party games and 1st party Nintendo games.
But, if I make a comparison about how big is my interest between of them, I still have waaaay... higher interest in 3rd party games than 1st party Nintendo games since I don't stuck on same franchises all the time.

I like to try other games by 3rd party developers with different or same genre.
Maybe I grew up by PS1 games during my teenhood in year 1998 and PS2 games during my college age in year 2002, I played a lot of 3rd party games like DDR, The Sims, FF VIII, FF IX, FF X, Harvest Moon on PS1 & PS2, K-1 games on PS2, etc that shaped my role model of great games to play.

I didn't grew up by N64 and Gamecube games during PS1 & PS2 era so I have no idea about 3D Mario game called Mario 64, zelda games, fire emblem, etc.
I have no idea at all since I never knew there was N64 machine existence during my teenhood until Gamecube era I knew Gamecube existence from reading local games magazine in 2000's era.

Fast forward, after I grew up become adult people and having a job, I tried to play some 1st party Nintendo games from Wii as it was my reintroduction about Nintendo games from its unique way to play by using Wiimote and motion play, I was sold on Wii idea.

As I played more Nintendo games, there are some other Nintendo IP I like them such as Mii games, and other Nintendo IP I show a little interest like Kirby on Switch since I have never played Kirby games before and I didn't have interest with Kirby games before until I dared myself to play Kirby Star Allies on Switch and it was okay but didn't make me really hype into Kirby franchise.

So, to clarify this, I still have interest with 1st party Nintendo games but i'm not a huge fan of them as 3rd party games franchises especially DDR that shaped me became Expert DDR player since 20 years ago still lingering in my mind so I will always get the appeal from 3rd party games with some new ideas or the ideas that I really hyped on it. And the reason I still not huge fan of 1st party Nintendo games because their genre are still limited compared with 3rd party games.

I like Rhythm games by 3rd party developers and I really devoted to Rhythm games from Konami like DDR, Beatmania IIDX, GITADORA, Para Para Paradise, etc.
But, Nintendo still doesn't have Rhythm games with same gameplay as those Konami Rhythm games with banger music and a lot of variety of Rhythm games.
Nintendo only have Rhythm Heaven and for me it wasn't interesting presentation of Rhythm game I want to play.
Other peoples especially Nintendo fans might be like Rhythm Heaven but I don't since that game doesn't have a standard to looks like DDR or Beatmania IIDX gameplay presentation.

Talking about the biggest Nintendo IP like Mario games, I personally don't really have much hype on them despite I like to collect and play some of Mario games, but if I compared the progression of 3D Mario games with 1st party Sony game Ratchet & Clank games, I personally prefer Ratchet & Clank games than 3D Mario games for better voice acting, interesting storyline model instead of damsel in distress all the time from Mario games, no punishment (Game Over screen) for keep dying in the game.
Some of Nintendo gamer don't really mind with silent Mario but I personally don't really like of never talk Mario (except for groan and grunt) when the other similar games did better.
It made me think Nintendo still really take a baby step to progress while 3rd party developers take a mile steps forward.

I don't have issue with 1st party Nintendo games but 3rd party games are still my best role model.

A lot of Switch owners do only play Nintendo games look at the sales charts - same handful of games week in week out with most 3rd party titles struggling to get in - where did the latest Bayo spinoff chart exactly?
That was a major third party exclusive, but as a spin off could be a hard sell, but then Bayo 3 only managed around 1m sales which means approx 1% of all Switch owners bought such a highly anticipated Switch exclusive.

Nintendo was originally the home for everything so I think for gamers over 30 there is a natural interest in many genres or even associating games made by 3rd party devs as “Nintendo games” because that’s where they ended up. As such for me I can’t really answer that question as it depends on the genre. For adventure games I will play Zelda over most others like assassins creed or god of war (have both franchises) but I will play Street Fighter over Smash. I couldn’t have a Nintendo system that only had exclusives though (as I do with PlayStation) as I instinctively see a Nintendo system as the home for everything (that devs will put on it).
